Kenya Sevens Rugby Coach Mike Friday resigns, cites interference and limited funding

Updated Wednesday, July 31st 2013 at 19:36 GMT +3 Kenya Sevens Rugby Coach Mike Friday has resigned citing interference from certain individuals at the Kenya Rugby Union and insufficient funding.

Friday wrote to KRU chairman, Mwangi Muthee on Wednesday, saying that “with heart”, he and Chris Brown, the New Zealander strength and body conditioning coach of the Kenya team, “assure you that we have not taken the decision lightly”.
He alluded to Kenya’s insufficient funding and dissatisfaction with some directors of the KRU whose past spats with the coach were always in the public domain.
“Kenya Sevens team is a fantastic group of players and it has been a privilege for both Chris and I to have worked with them all. They are precious assets that need to be given the support and direction by Kenya Rugby in order to maximize their potential”, he said.
The KRU chairman received Friday’s resignation note while on business trip to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and said his board would react quickly to the circumstances.

Labour Cabinet Secretary Kazungu Kambi says teachers will not get July pay

Nairobi, Kenya: Labour Cabinet Secretary Kazungu Kambi has said teachers will not be paid July salaries.

Kambi alleged that the return-to-work formula between the government and Kenya National Union of Teachers ( Knut) was not included in the deal.
Kambi made the remarks at a press conference on Thursday.
This comes a day after Knut issued a seven-day strike notice over government’s move to withhold their July salaries.

Tudame! *SMH*

So yesterday in my "trying new things" mood, i decided to buy Melvins Vanilla flavoured tea bags. Boy oh boy, in my crazy imagination, it tasted like a cup of the great god Zeus ( of the greek mythology) pee! In short, it tasted like nothing i have ever tasted before, simply heavenly!
I think Melvins should pay me for the above description. Ama?
Onto other matters....Women!
Si tudame twa Nairobi tuna mambo! Sio the uptown ones na sio tule twa tuVitz, no, wale walitoka Karatina last week and they try sooo damn hard to fit in, it's hilarious.
If you've ever seen the girls who study at the KQ college, they always have their makeup properly done almost to a fault. So nikiwa kwa double M yesterday waiting ijae, in walks this chic. She proceeded to ask the Makanga in her not so uuhhhmm great english whether the matatu was headed to the KQ Pride Centre. In the usual way, the Makanga informed her matatu inaenda Airport so atashuka on the way. She stated in matter of factly way vile yeye haendi Airport but Pride Centre. Man, it was soo annoying!
Then she goes like,
"Mimi nimekwambia Pride Centre na sio Airport"
"Madam, gari za Airport ndio pia gari zinapita Pride Centre so panda matatu"
Man, i just had to confirm who this chic was.
Am not hating on her or anything but you don't get to talk to people just the way you feel like ati juu unaenda Pride Centre na yeye ni Makanga. Man, that's not who he is, it's what he does to put food on the table. Who do you think you are? Nancy Baraza?
Especially when dressed in those clothes that scream Eastleigh from as far as Timbuktu! Go to Ngara, Gikomba or Toi Market and acquire some style first. With those eyebrows that you felt necessary to draw them back on, nah, the ATT was uncalled for.

Unemployed university graduate teachers who scored below C plain in Form Four have been locked out of the ongoing recruitment of 5,547 high school staff.
The Teachers Service Commission insisted that only those who obtained C+ and above would be hired to teach in secondary schools.
Thousands of primary school teachers, some of them unemployed, have earned degrees, which technically allows them to be promoted to graduate teachers.
Wednesday, secretary Gabriel Lengoiboni adviced P1 teachers who obtained degrees yet they had a C plain in Form four final exams to apply for primary school places.
The commission is recruiting 5,592 new teachers for public primary schools.
But Mr Lengoiboni said all those with C plain in KCSE and degrees will be recruited for primary schools but offered salaries for graduates.
“Our rule is clear that we only upgrade them but they continue teaching in primary schools,” he said.
Mr Lengoiboni also feared that the commission would not find enough arts graduates in history, religious Studies and business studies.
In the last decade, the commission gave incentives to science teachers, prompting university students to flock to the sciences, he said.
“We are now requesting our universities to train more arts-oriented teachers,” Mr Lengoiboni said.
The commission yesterday advertised 11,139 vacancies for teachers in primary and post-primary teachers in its website www.tsc.go.ke.
Of these 5,122 would be posted to primary schools and 4,878 in secondary schools.
Some 1,139 will replace those who have left in the past one year due to natural attrition.
Kitui county will recruit the highest number of primary school teachers (280) followed by Kakamega (270), Kilifi (232), Narok (236), Makueni (229) and Homa Bay 227.
Interested candidates must send in their applications before August 16.
Those who had registered with TSC at the height of the teachers’ strike last month have been advised to apply afresh.

Sniffer dogs keep the wicked out of Laikipia villages

Updated Thursday, August 1st 2013 at 10:32 GMT +3
One of the bloodhounds follows a trail handled by Kenya Police reservists.
Laikipia, Kenya: In the course of his administrative career, the chief of Ilpolei Location in Laikipia North, Stephen Putunoi, has never seen security so tight thanks to sniffer dogs owned by a neighbouring rancher.

He says the reality of a more secure area had not sunk into his mind until one morning in 2011, when a village shop was broken into and packets of maize flour, crates of soda, a stack of cigarette packs and money were stolen.
A furious Putunoi called a village baraza to address the issue and in the meeting, he says, he made remarks whose consequences worked miracles: he announced to villagers that he would call in sniffer dogs owned by a private rancher to help trace the lost items and the culprit.
“It was then that a fidgety youth confessed to having broken into the shop. He apologised and promised to make amends to the victim and the issue ended there,” says the chief.
Volunteer services
This illuminates how three sniffer dogs imported from America and Europe by Ol Jogi Limited, a wildlife conservancy, have changed things in the cattle rustling and poaching hotspot that is Laikipia North.
Ol Jogi General Manager John Weller says they first brought the sniffer bloodhounds for rhino protection in 1989; additional Belgian Malinois attack dogs were ordered from Europe last year.
Jamie Gaymer, the Wildlife Security Manager at Ol Jogi, calls the dogs “just another conservation tool”. He says while the dogs were initially brought in at a cost of Sh210,000 strictly for wildlife security, the need for excellent community liaison has seen them volunteer the canines to help settle nasty village cases.
“All that is needed is non-interfered evidence at the scene, such as a footprint or a piece of the suspect’s clothes or personal effects that the dogs can use to launch a trail,” says Gaymer.
Dol Dol OCS Bernard Ateba says the dogs are only used to solve communal crimes with the approval of local security and administration officials, even though Gaymer and 24 other Ol Jogi game wardens are officers in the National Police Reserve.
According to Mr Putunoi, the canines have given them a breakthrough in various criminal cases in the area and several suspects currently have cases at the Nanyuki law courts after the dogs sniffed them out.

Ulinzi Stars eye AFC Leopards scalp

Ulinzi Stars are not taking the match against AFC Leopards lightly and have vowed to turn tables on the former league champions on Saturday in their return match at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru.

Ulinzi Stars have kept their title ambitions burning and a win will improve their morale and put them at par with the leaders and former champions Gor Mahia.
The soldiers are placed fourth with 27 points from 17 matches, while Gor are at the top with 35 points with a match less.
The team have intensified their training and a victory against ‘Ingwe’ will be help in their title ambitions.
Ulinzi deputy coach, Sammy Simiyu, knows only too well that the match will be tough, but says Leopards are not unbeatable although they (Leopards) are also in a winning streak.
“Although Ingwe are a big team, they should know we are equally good and they are not indomitable. We have beaten them in the past although they humiliated us in the first leg clash. This time round we are going to pluck out their claws,” he warned.
Simiyu said they have to avenge their first leg defeat at Mumias Sports Complex by picking maximum points on Saturday.
AFC Leopards won the first leg clash from a solitary goal by striker Charles Okwemba.
Ulinzi Stars were supposed to face Karuturi Sports this afternoon at ‘Old Trafford’ Stadium in Naivasha but the Kenya Premier League has pushed back the match by two weeks.
“Playing AFC Leopards is a great match and our players are well aware of the task ahead of them and the demands that goes with it. We are not taking any chances,” he said.
Ulinzi Stars made a strong comeback from World Military Games in Baku, Azerbaijan, by winning all their two matches against Chemelil Sugar and Nairobi City Stars, each falling by a solitary goal.

In Summary

Kajiado has been named the richest county for the second year running based on the relatively lower level of poverty among its residents.
According to the second edition of the County Fact Sheets, the people considered poor in the county can be pulled out of poverty the easiest.
However, the report compiled by the Commission for Revenue Allocation has not specified the number of people considered poor.
In Kenya, one is considered poor if he or she cannot afford Sh106.25 ($1.25) per day.
According to the commission, compared to other counties, Kajiado needs the least amount money to move its poor people out of poverty.
On the other hand, Turkana county, which is classified as the poorest, county will need the highest amount.
Turkana has its poor people living 67.5 per cent adrift of the poverty line.
That means the Turkana county government has a bigger task and must spend much more money to lift its poor population from poverty.
Ninety four people in every 100 in Turkana are considered to be living below the poverty line.
In the recent past, Turkana has made news due to the increasing use of agricultural technologies that have improved food production. In the medium term, this could see the number of the absolutely poor reduced.
Nationally, it is estimated that 46 per cent of the population lives below the poverty line although a recent World Bank report indicated that the number could have dropped further to 38 per cent.
Kenya has 38 million people, meaning that about 14.4 million people are considered poor.
According to the latest report, which has also shown county disparities in health, security and other infrastructure requirements, Kirinyaga is the  second richest county. Its poor people are living only 5.8 percentage points away from the poverty line.
Last year, Nairobi was second but this year it is ranked sixth. The city county has its poor people living 6.9 percentage points away from the poverty line.
In Meru county, the poor are 6.2 percentage points away from the poverty line. The county has been in the news lately after the UK banned the importation of miraa (khat) considered one of the leading income earners for farmers in the county.
Lamu is the fourth richest county in this year’s standings, with its poor people on average living 6.3 percentage points away from the poverty line.
On the opposite end, following Turkana from the bottom is Mandera county, where the people considered poor live 45.7 percentage points away from the poverty benchmark.
In Samburu, which is ranked 45th, poor people live 42.4 percentage points away from the poverty line.

Secret meeting sees Cesc Fabregas set to join Manchester United

Updated Tuesday, July 30th 2013 at 08:01 GMT +3 Cesc Fabregas has agreed to join Manchester United following a secret meeting between the Barcelona star's agent Darren Dein and Old Trafford chief executive Ed Woodward.
Sunday Express Sport, which broke the news of United's big move for the former Arsenal star on May 26, can reveal that Woodward came home early from his club's extensive Far East tour to try and facilitate the incoming Old Trafford record deal. That, we can disclose, included a meeting with the respected Dein, who also helped swing United's £24million capture of Robin van Persie last summer.

Dein told Woodward that Fabregas wants to return to the Premier League and that United and not former club Arsenal, who have first option on the Spanish midfielder, is his preferred destination.

United have made three bids for the 26-year-old, the latest more than £30m and one which they were confident Barcelona would accept.

But the departure of cancer stricken manager Tito Vilanova, who has been replaced by Gerardo Martino, has given United a big problem. Martino doesn't want as one of his first acts to sanction the departure of a popular player.

This has left United frustrated in the knowledge that their prime transfer target wants to join them and is happy with the personal terms on offer.

Now they believe it will be up to Fabregas to make his feelings known to the new Nou Camp manager and could even mean the former Gunner submitting a transfer request.

United boss David Moyes is prepared to wait for the man who he believes would strengthen his side's defence of the Premier League title and would also enhance their Champions League ambitions.

Only if Barcelona categorically insist that Fabregas will not be allowed to leave during this transfer window will Moyes move on to other midfield transfer targets which include his former club Everton's Marouane Fellaini and Newcastle's Yohan Cabaye.

United are also monitoring the situation involving Spurs ace Gareth Bale, who Real Madrid are claiming is the subject of an £80m bid.

United would rival the Spanish side if Spurs decide to cash in on the Welsh international - something chairman Daniel Levy insists won't happen this summer.

But Fabregas remains the prime transfer objective for Moyes especially after knowing the outcome of the meeting between the player's representative and United's main transfer negotiator.

Uhuru ICC lawyer takes Airtel and Safaricom to court

President Uhuru Kenyatta’s lawyer has filed “confidential” lawsuits against Safaricom and Airtel, the two leading mobile telephone service providers in the country.
Mr Steven Kay, a Queens Counsel who is part of Mr Kenyatta’s defence team at the International Criminal Court (ICC), is seeking access to unspecified information from the two mobile phone companies.
The first case against Safaricom was filed at the High Court on Friday before Mr Justice David Majanja and the second against Airtel was filed yesterday before Mr Justice Isaac Lenaola.
President Kenyatta and his deputy, Mr William Ruto, are set to stand trial at the ICC later this year. They face crimes against humanity charges stemming from the 2007/8 post-election violence. Also on trial is former radio journalist Joshua arap Sang.
Mr Kenyatta is not a party to the lawsuits filed in Nairobi and Mr Kay is represented in the two cases by the law firm of Ogeto, Otachi & Company Advocates.
The substantive applications will come up in the High Court this morning, but meanwhile it has been impossible to find out what Mr Kay wants from Safaricom and Airtel because of the veil of secrecy placed around the case.
The original applications, even before the main suits were filed, are for the cases to be heard in secret.
In the application, Mr Kay sought the following orders from the court: “That the court do make orders for the confidential filing and hearing of the intended constitutional petition to be filed by the petitioner; that the court makes orders for the confidential filing of any application in relation to the said petition; that access to the intended petition and any application to be restricted to the parties to the petition.”
The applications, very rare in the history of the Kenyan courts, were filed and heard behind closed doors. The orders opened the way for the British lawyer’s Kenyan representatives to file the petition against Safaricom.
In the petition, Mr Kay seeks “protection of the petitioner’s rights under the Constitution; orders for information; and such other orders as the court may deem fit.”
Yesterday morning, Mr Kay’s lawyers filed a petition against Airtel, seeking a declaration relating to “the right of a fair trial as provided for under the Constitution.”
He also seeks “an order for release of information, liberty to apply and such other orders.”
The Nation learnt that lawyers for both Safaricom and Airtel agreed to the application that the cases be heard in secret.
The Nation’s efforts to access the case files on Monday were unsuccessful. Usually, files of live cases are kept in the court’s registry, where reporters are usually allowed by registry officials and court clerks to read them.
When our reporter visited the court’s Judicial Review Division registry yesterday, he learnt of Mr Kay’s suits from the main register of suits. This story is based on details about the cases as entered in that register by a registry clerk.
On further enquiry on whether the files could be made available to our reporter, the registry clerks said that a specific directive had been given that the files containing Mr Kay’s petitions and related applications should not be accessed by anybody else and that the files had been locked up in the office of a Deputy Registrar in charge of the division.
On Friday when the application for confidentiality was filed, Nation reporters were barred from entering the registry and were therefore unable to see the suits that had been filed that day.

Tanzania's BigBrother The Chase representative has been disqualified from the reality show.

Nando was served with his second and third strike by Bigbrother last night which led to his disqualification.

This season Big Brother has imposed a Three Strike Rule, which will be applicable to Housemates who commit serious infringements.

Nando recieved  his first Strike last month after he was found carrying a knife to the Channel O Party.

After a heated argument with Ghanaian housemate Elikem on Friday, Nando received his second Strike last night.

The Tanzanian was yesterday called into the Diary Room and given his third Strike for making threats against Elikem's life, saying: "I feel like stabbing him. A nigga like that deserves to die".
He was asked to leave the house immediately.
The Show's producers have released a press statement concerning the incident, here it is:
After breaking the rules relating to violence and provocation, tonight (Sunday July 28) saw Big Brother The Chase housemate Nando disqualified from the 91 day reality show. This season Big Brother has been issuing strikes to housemates for inappropriate behavior with three strikes resulting in disqualification from the game.
The 22-year-old from Tanzania was issued a first strike in week five of the show for carrying a knife to a Big Brother party. Following an altercation with fellow housemate Elikem late on Friday night, today Big Brother issued two more strikes against him – one for provocation and one for concealing a pair of scissors in his bed after the argument.
With three strikes, Big Brother tonight disqualified Nando from the game. For his part in Friday’s altercation, Elikem was also issued a strike by Big Brother, his first in the game.
Given that M-Net and show producers Endemol, are committed to ensuring the safety of all housemates in the Big Brother house, they view such incidents in a serious light and will continue to take the necessary actions against housemates who break the strict rules prohibiting violence in the Big Brother house.
